Nigeria: COVID-19 cases surpass 16,000

Media reports claim that Nigeria’s health institutions have not conducted enough testing due to lack of capacity

ANKARA (AA) – The COVID-19 or coronavirus cases have surpassed 16,000 in Nigeria with 420 deaths, the country’s health authorities said.
According to local media reports, the surge has come amid a shortage in a testing capacity.
“On June 14, new 403 cases have been confirmed and 13 deaths recorded in Nigeria,” said the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) on Sunday.
“To date, 16,085 cases have been confirmed, 5,220 patients have been discharged and 420 deaths have been recorded in 35 states and the federal capital territory,” the NCDC added.
Many Nigerians believe that their country’s concerned health institutions have not conducted enough testing for the deadly pandemic, according to the Nigerian online newspaper the Premium Times on Monday.
According to media reports the country, is also starting to witness community transmission.
After originating in Wuhan, China last December, COVID-19 has spread to at least 188 countries and regions.
The pandemic has killed nearly 433,000 people worldwide, with more than 7.8 million confirmed cases. The recoveries have also surpassed 3.7 million, according to figures compiled by US-based Johns Hopkins University.
