Nigeria expects to get 1st COVID-19 vaccine in February

Country has been working with World Bank to ensure supply of vaccine, says communique

LAGOS, Nigeria (AA) - Nigeria is expecting to receive its first doses of a COVID-19 vaccine next month, a top government official said.

In a communique issued on Thursday, Kayode Fayemi, head of the Nigeria Governors' Forum, said the country has been working with the World Bank to ensure the supply of the vaccine in the country.

"Nigeria is among 12 countries in Africa that have indicated readiness of the 92 qualified countries for the facility and will by end of February 2021 receive its first shipment of vaccines," Fayemi said.

Nigeria's COVID-19 confirmed cases has risen to 116,655, including 1,185 deaths, according to an update by the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on Friday.

At least 39 health workers have been infected in the last two weeks in the southern Edo State.​​​​​​​
