Nigeria: Police bar 'revolution' protesters

Calls for revolution considered treason under Nigerian law, protesters risk death sentence or life in prison

By Olarewaju Kola

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (AA) - The police in Nigeria have barred protests by human rights activists in support of revolution in any part of the country.

Nigerian police chief on Monday said revolution protesters risk death sentence or life imprisonment, the punishment prescribed by the country's criminal law for treasonable act under which revolution calls or protests fall.

The ban came following the arrest of a U.S.-based Nigerian activist and owner of an online news medium in the north-central Kwara State by the secret police for "instigating revolution" in the country.
