LAGOS, Nigeria (AA) - US President Donald Trump on Monday held his first telephone conversation with the Nigerian leader Muhammadu Buhari, with both leaders agreeing to step up cooperation in the fight against terrorism.
Nigerian presidency described the conversation as “cordial”, saying Trump has also invited Buhari to Washington at a “mutually convenient date”.
“The two leaders discussed ways to improve cooperation in the fight against terrorism through provision of necessary equipment,” according to a statement by Buhari’s spokesman Femi Adesina.
The statement said Trump encouraged Buhari to keep up the “good work he is doing”, and also commended him for the efforts made in rescuing 24 of the over 276 schoolgirls Boko Haram had abducted on Apr. 14, 2014.
“President Trump assured the Nigerian President of U.S. readiness to cut a new deal in helping Nigeria in terms of military weapons to combat terrorism,” it added.
The conversation had been at the request of Trump. Buhari took the call in London where he is on a medical vacation.
