Nigeria records 58 more COVID-19 cases

West African country's caseload reaches 59,345, including 1,113 virus-linked deaths and 50,768 recoveries

ANKARA (AA) - As many as 58 more people contracted the novel coronavirus in Nigeria in the last 24 hours, pushing the caseload to 59,345, authorities said Monday.

Some 50,768 patients have been discharged while 1,113 died across the West African country to date, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control said in its latest update.

With over 19,600 infections, the commercial capital Lagos remains Nigeria’s worst-hit city. It is followed by the Federal Capital Territory, which includes the capital Abuja, with more than 5,700 cases, and the southwestern Plateau State, where almost 3,500 cases have been confirmed.

Africa's most populous country is among the five hardest-hit countries on the continent, along with South Africa, Egypt, Morocco, and Ethiopia.

Its economy has been badly hit by the pandemic, as well as low oil prices. Crude is a major source of foreign exchange earnings for Nigeria.
