ABUJA, Nigeria (AA) - Nigeria’s Lagos state is experiencing the beginnings of a fourth wave of the coronavirus pandemic and the country may soon be facing a surge in infections, an official warned Tuesday.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu stressed that the rising number of cases was due to the failure of citizens to comply with preventive measures.

“Most of the continents of the world – including Africa – are now experiencing a fourth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Unfortunately, Lagos State is not left out, as we are also experiencing the beginnings of a fourth wave with the current positivity rate at 6%,” he said.

In Nigeria, where the omicron variant has been detected in six people so far, a total of 214,896 COVID-19 cases have been seen since the beginning of pandemic while nearly 3,000 people have lost their lives while battling the virus.
