Only 2 witnesses testified in Epstein, Maxwell grand jury proceedings

WASHINGTON (AA) - The US Justice Department (DOJ) revealed that only two witnesses testified before grand juries investigating Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, according to a new court filing.

It said an FBI agent was the sole witness in the Epstein proceedings, while the same agent and a New York Police Department detective assigned to the FBI’s Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Force testified before the Maxwell grand jury.

"Both witnesses are still alive; the FBI agent continues to be an agent with the FBI, and the Detective continues to be a Detective with the NYPD as well as a Task Force Officer," said the filing.

It added that many of the victims, whose accounts were later relayed to the grand jury, testified at Maxwell’s trial, offering similar statements. Some have also made their accounts public in civil litigation.

"The Government is providing under seal a list of witnesses whose accounts were conveyed in the grand jury proceedings and a corresponding list noting which witnesses testified at trial," it said.

The disclosure came as the DOJ filed a memorandum ahead of a court-imposed deadline to support partially unsealing grand jury materials. Prosecutors said much of the testimony mirrors what was presented at Maxwell’s criminal trial and in civil litigation.

Maxwell, 63, is serving 20 years in prison for conspiring to sexually abuse minors.

Epstein mingled with the wealthy and powerful, including prominent politicians, for decades before he pleaded guilty in 2008 to felony solicitation and procuring a person under the age of 18 for prostitution.
