Opposition Syrian National Army liberates dam on Euphrates River from terrorist PKK/YPG

Tishrin Dam, in terrorist PKK/YPG hands since 2015, is critical for Syrian electricity generation

By Anadolu staff

MANBIJ, Syria (AA) - The opposition Syrian National Army (SNA) has liberated Tishrin Dam, which provides a large part of the water and electricity supply of the provinces in eastern Syria, from terrorist group PKK/YPG occupation, according to local sources.

As part of Operation Dawn of Freedom, the SNA took control of the dam, which had been under the occupation of the terrorist group PKK/YPG since 2015.

Located south of Manbij district on the Euphrates River, Tishrin is the largest and most important dam captured to date.

Approximately 70% of Syria's electricity needs are met from the Tishrin, Tabqa and Baath dams.

The Tishrin Dam on the west bank of the Euphrates was captured by the terrorist PKK/YPG with US support in December 2015. The dam was the first point occupied by the terrorist group west of the Euphrates, with the US establishing a base at the dam in January 2016.

With the ouster of Syria's Assad regime, the terrorist PKK/YPG has been seeking to exploit the country's instability and power vacuum.

In its 40-year terror campaign against Türkiye, the PKK – listed as a terrorist organization by Türkiye, the US, and EU – has been responsible for the deaths of over 40,000 people, including women, children, infants, and the elderly.

The YPG is the PKK's offshoot in Syria, an area where for years the group has tried to establish a terrorist corridor along the Turkish border.

In recent years Türkiye has deployed troops and worked with local allies such as the opposition Syrian National Army to prevent this and keep locals and the border safe from terrorist oppression.
