Over 1,000 Greek beekeepers hold protest rally in Athens
Beekeepers complain how skyrocketing production costs, among other problems, have become unbearable
By Ahmet Gencturk
ATHENS (AA) – Over 1,000 Greek beekeepers from around the country held a protest rally in Athens on Thursday, just one day after a massive farmers rally in the capital.
The beekeepers decried skyrocketing production costs and other problems, including the circulation of fake honey, the sale of imported honey as Greek honey, and the fire department limiting their movement in forests, saying these make their production costs unbearable.
Unsatisfied with the results of their meetings last week with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, on Wednesday thousands of Greek farmers, with some 150 tractors, drove to Athens where they held a massive rally.
The farmers demand subsidized electricity and fuel for the agricultural sector, which they say is becoming unprofitable in the face of rising costs.
