Peru declares state of emergency in coastal Callao region to combat organized crime

Government says it took action in region, some 10 kilometers west of capital Lima, after rise in theft, extortion, and racketeering

ISTANBUL (AA) - Peru on Friday declared a state of emergency in six districts of the coastal Callao region due to escalating violence by criminal gangs.

Official Peruvian daily El Peruano said the government took action after a rise in theft, threats, extortion, and racketeering in the region, which lies some 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) west of Lima, the capital.

The state of emergency will be in effect for 60 days.

Officials said security operations will be carried out to disrupt the activities of criminal groups and restore order with the support of the Peruvian National Police and the Armed Forces.

Interior Minister Juan Jose Santivanez announced the decision after a meeting with various sector representatives.

The state of emergency decree was signed by President Dina Boluarte, Prime Minister Gustavo Adrianzen, and the defense, interior, and justice ministers.

In recent weeks, unions in Lima have been staging protests complaining of violence in various parts of the country.

They have urged the government to boost security measures to protect the public.
