ISTANBUL (AA) - The President of the Philippines, Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr, on Tuesday vowed to protect the country’s territories and maritime zones amid tensions with China.
“We stand firm. We will never tolerate any act of disrespect against our sovereignty,” Marcos said as he addressed the 127th Philippine Navy anniversary celebration in Zambales province.
In a statement released by the Philippine Presidential Communications Office, the president said that the Asian nation will keep upholding its marine rights.
“We will continue to safeguard our maritime zones and exercise our maritime entitlements, in accordance with international law,” Marcos said.
“We reaffirm our commitment to being a responsible member of the international community, engaging in all matters diplomatically and upholding the established principles under international law,” he added.
Meanwhile, the China Coast Guard said Tuesday that it observed a Philippine civilian vessel during its delivery of vital supplies to an “illegally grounded” ship at Second Thomas Shoal, according to Xinhua News.
The Philippines did not immediately respond to China’s claim.
