ANKARA (AA) – The Philippines security forces have arrested a Chinese national on suspicion of espionage, claiming to have recovered equipment from his possession, which the authorities believe could be used for spying on military facilities, state media reported on Monday.
The suspect, identified as Deng Yuanqing, was presented before the media along with two other alleged Filipino cohorts, as the military said security in all military camps and facilities nationwide will be further tightened, Philippine News Agency reported.
Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr., at a media briefing at the Department of Justice in Manila on Monday said the military has already beefed up security at its camps, with strict checking of individuals entering armed forces compounds and installations.
Authorities claimed that the detained Chinese national and his two Filipino accomplices, using a sports utility vehicle loaded with devices for espionage, conducted surveillance operations in key civilian and military installations.
National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Office of the Cybercrime Division chief Jeremy Lotoc identified the three as Chinese national Deng Yuanqing, and Filipinos Ronel Jojo Balundo Besa and Jason Amado Fernandez.
Follow-up operations are ongoing to track down other members of the group, he further said.
Relations between China and the Philippines have long struggled, mainly because of the lingering South China Sea conflict.
