Philippines, Taiwan brace for super typhoon

Flights cancelled as Super Typhoon Doksuri likely to hit northern Philippines

ISTANBUL (AA) - The Philippines has seen numerous flight cancellations as it braced for Super Typhoon Doksuri, which is expected to affect the country’s north before heading to Taiwan.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said winds exceeding 115 miles (185 kilometers) per hour are expected within the next 12 hours, warning people to take safety measures, according to the Philippine News Agency.

Moderate to significant impacts from strong winds could be experienced in areas on Babuyan Islands, and the northern and eastern portions of mainland Cagayan, it said.

Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau has also issued a warning and said that the typhoon’s primary impact is expected to be concentrated on the Hengchun Peninsula in the south.

The typhoon is also expected to extend its reach to other regions in the south, according to the Central News Agency.

Doksuri has been designated as a super typhoon by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC), operated by the US Navy and Air Force in Hawaii.
