Polish support for accepting refugees from Ukraine down by a third since war started

As war in Ukraine drags on, and amid farmers’ protests and unease over US policy, Poles’ support for taking in Ukrainian refugees has plummeted

WARSAW (AA) - About 60% of Poles believe Poland should accept refugees from Ukraine, according to a CBOS survey, a share much lower than at the beginning of the Russian war over two years ago.

The CBOS survey, done on March 7-17, asked whether Poland should accept Ukrainian refugees. Some 61% of respondents said yes (17% chose the option "definitely yes" and 44% "probably yes"). Some 31% of Poles are against accepting refugees from Ukraine (19% "rather not," 12% "definitely not"), while 8% had no opinion.

In March 2022, weeks after the start of the war in Ukraine, 94% supported accepting refugees.

The study also showed that more Poles now believe the war in Ukraine threatens Poland's security. Some 83% said the conflict threatens Poland's security, up 9 percentage points from last November.

The respondents were also asked how they see the possibility of an armed attack by Russia against NATO countries in the next three to eight years. The survey showed that 57% consider a Russian invasion likely and 32% do not.

Poland is a longtime member of NATO, but the alliance has feared Russia’s war on non-member Ukraine could draw in the alliance or embolden Moscow to strike at NATO member states.
