OVIEDO, Spain (AA) - Portugal’s center-right Democratic Alliance (AD) is projected to win the country’s third general election in as many years, according to projections published Sunday night after polls closed.

Prime Minister Luis Montenegro’s AD party is expected to improve its results from the 2024 election, mainly at the expense of the Socialist Party.

However, projections suggest it will still fall short of the 116 seats needed for a majority.

Several exit polls were published, and one indicates the far-right Chega party could come in second place – winning as much as 25.5% of the vote, up from 18.1% in 2010.

Portuguese broadcasters also project a high rate of abstention, with most predictions suggesting more than four out of every 10 voters stayed home for the third general elections in three years.

These snap elections were called over ethical concerns surrounding the business endeavors of Montenegro’s family.

Definitive results should be known later Sunday night.
