Education Minister Attal named country's new prime minister

By Feiza Ben Mohamed

NICE, France (AA) - French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday appointed a new prime minister on Tuesday.

Gabriel Attal will take the new role on Tuesday from his predecessor Elisabeth Borne who has already submitted her resignation.

Attal was considered one of the brilliant students of "Macronia," which means President Macron's political world and ideas.

Born in 1989 in the town of Clamart near Paris, Attal started politics in the Socialist Party in 2006 and started working for then-Health Minister Marisol Touraine in 2012-2017.

Attal was elected member of the parliament from the department of Hauts-de-Seine in 2017, from the majority party La Republique en Marche.

A year later, he was appointed spokesperson of the government and was named to other ministerial posts until 2022, when he was appointed delegated minister of public accounts.

He quit the post in July 2023 to become education minister and was widely criticized for his decision to ban the Muslim overgarment abaya in schools across France.
