BIRMIGHAM, England (AA) – Just after starting a speech at the opposition Labour Party Conference in Liverpool, England on Tuesday, party leader Keir Starmer was interrupted by a protester who stormed the stage and threw glitter over his head.
The protester hugged the Labour leader and shouted: “True democracy is citizen-led. We demand a people's house, we are in crisis – politics needs an update. We are in crisis.”
Apparently unfazed, Starmer said, “If he thinks that bothers me, he doesn’t know me.”
Local police later said the 28-year-old protestor had been arrested on suspicion of assault, breach of the peace, and causing a public nuisance.
The protester appears to be a supporter of a new group called People Demand Democracy, whose T-shirt he was seen wearing. The group later shared a video of the event on social media.
The annual Labour conference began on Sunday and is due to wrap on Wednesday.
Labour is showing ahead in most polls, as the next general election in Britain could be held at late as January 2025.
