ISTANBUL (AA) – Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday signed a law renouncing his country’s agreement with the UK on fisheries.
The document, which was published on the Russian government portal, terminated the agreement signed between the Soviet Union and the UK in 1956.
According to the agreement, British fishing boats were allowed to fish in certain areas of the Barents Sea along the coast of Russia’s northern Kola Peninsula.
Due to Russia being the successor of the Soviet Union, the fisheries agreement continued to be in force.
The Russian State Duma, the lower house of the country’s parliament, had renounced the agreement on Feb. 21.
