ISTANBUL (AA) - German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall has signed a €1.88 billion ($1.94 billion) contract for the digitization of the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr), the firm said on Tuesday.

As the prime contractor, Rheinmetall Electronics GmbH will be responsible for setting up an integrated communication network, which is called "Tactical Wide Area Network for Land Based Operations" (TaWAN LBO).

The total value of the contract is several billion euros and the first order is worth €1.88 billion, according to the statement.

The duration of the contract is announced to be 10 years and the delivery of the communication network will take place between 2026 and 2029.

“We are thankful for the great trust that the Bundeswehr is placing in us regarding its ambitious digitalization efforts. Now that the Bundeswehr will be receiving TaWAN LBO and D-LBO from a single source, the conditions for synchronized coordination concerning the introduction of both systems are given," said Armin Papperger, CEO of Rheinmetall AG.

In December 2024, Rheinmetall, together with the defense company KNDS, was commissioned to equip 10,000 vehicles of the German Armed Forces with digital radios.
