Screen idol Redford won an Oscar for directing Ordinary People and was a longtime advocate for environmental and social causes

ISTANBUL (AA) - Robert Redford, the iconic actor and Oscar-winning director famed for his star turns in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and All the President’s Men, has died at the age of 89, according to his publicist.

Cindi Berger said in a statement to CNN that Redford passed away on Tuesday at his home in the mountains of Utah, “the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved. He will be missed greatly.”

She added that the family requests privacy.

Redford also earned acclaim as a director, winning a 1981 Academy Award for Ordinary People and helming films such as A River Runs Through It (1992). He was widely respected for using his fame to champion environmental and social causes.
