Romania set to hold presidential election, with incumbent premier leading in latest poll

No candidate likely to secure over 50% of votes needed to be elected, surveys show

ATHENS (AA) – Romania is set to hold a presidential election on Sunday, with the latest polls showing a lead of incumbent prime minister and leader of Social Democratic Party (PSD), Marcel Ciolacu.

According to the findings of a poll by AtlasIntel, which was conducted between Nov. 15 and 20, Ciolacu is leading with 24.3%.

Nationalist candidate George Simion and reformist Elena Lasconi are behind with 15.4% and 15.3%, respectively.

Another recent survey by INSCOP indicated that for the first time in Romania's modern democratic history no candidate is likely to exceed 25% of the vote. If that's the case, a run-off will take place on Dec. 8.

Remus Stefureac, INSCOP’s research director, told Bulgaria's BTA news agency that the most probable scenario for now is that Ciolacu and Simion will compete in the second round.

He, however, did not rule out the possibility for Romania to have Lasconi as its first woman president.
