WASHINGTON (AA) - US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong on Sunday to condemn the attack at Sydney’s Bondi Beach that killed 15 people, the State Department said.

“The United States strongly condemns the heinous terrorist attack in Australia targeting a Hanukkah celebration hosted by Chabad-Lubavitch of Bond,” said a statement.

“We stand in solidarity with the Jewish community and with the Australian people as we pray for the victims and their families.”

The statement praised Australian first responders and bystanders for their “heroic response,” adding: “No community should have to fear publicly celebrating their faith and traditions due to the threat of extremist violence and terror.”

The Sunday attack targeted a Hanukkah celebration organized by the Chabad-Lubavitch community in Bondi. At least 15 people were killed and 40 others remained in hospital, according to the police.

Police said one shooter, 50, was killed at the scene, while the second, his 24-year-old son, sustained injuries and remains in hospital.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the incident as “an act of evil, antisemitism, terrorism,” and that “there is no place for violence and hate” in the country.
