Rubio, Hungarian foreign minister discuss ‘urgency’ of ending Ukraine war

During his meeting with Peter Szijjarto, US secretary of state also emphasizes ensuring long-term regional stability, State Department says

WASHINGTON (AA) - US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met Tuesday with Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto at the State Department, emphasizing the “urgency of ending the war in Ukraine,” according to the State Department.

“The Secretary emphasized the urgency of ending the war in Ukraine and ensuring lasting peace and stability in the region,” State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said in a statement.

The two also discussed strategic cooperation in energy and defense sectors, according to Bruce.

Hungary, a NATO and European Union member, has been advocating for direct discussions with Russia to end the war in Ukraine.

US President Donald Trump has also expressed his intention to broker a peace deal, though the path forward remains uncertain following his public spat last week with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the Oval Office.
