ISTANBUL (AA) - Russia has said Ukraine is preparing to accuse Moscow of “grossly violating” its nuclear obligations under the Convention on Nuclear Safety (CNS) of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
“Before the start of the 11th emergency special session of the UN General Assembly, the Kyiv regime continues to prepare for a large-scale provocation to accuse the Russian Federation of an alleged ‘gross violation’ of the obligations of the Convention on Nuclear Safety during the special military operation,” a statement by the Russian Defense Ministry read on Sunday.
The statement claimed several containers with “radioactive substances” were delivered to Ukraine from the territory of an unnamed European country, and that these will be used to “stage local contamination in the area of one of the radiation-hazardous objects controlled by the Kyiv regime.”
“The purpose of the provocation is to accuse the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation of allegedly inflicting indiscriminate strikes on radiation-hazardous objects in Ukraine, which led to the leakage of radioactive substances and contamination of the area,” it further said.
The CNS is a treaty of the IAEA signed in 1994 aiming to maintain a high level of safety in countries that possess nuclear power plants and ensure the commitment of its signatories to these goals.
