Russian defense minister visits remote garrisons in Arctic region
Sergey Shoygu also inspects central training ground for testing nuclear weapons

MOSCOW (AA) – Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoygu on Saturday inspected remote garrisons of the Northern Fleet, located in the Arctic region.
Shoygu also took an air tour over the central training ground on the Novaya Zemlya archipelago together with the head of the Russian Atomic Agency (Rosatom), Alexey Likhachev, the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement.
The minister inspected the official activities and the fulfillment of the tasks of the units stationed on Novaya Zemlya, including their readiness for the protection and defense of important objects, the statement said.
The central training ground of the Russian Federation on the Novaya Zemlya archipelago, located between the Barents and Kara Seas was established in 1954.
According to the Defense Ministry, 132 tests of nuclear weapons of different types were carried out there between 1954-1990.
