ISTANBUL (AA) – South Korea’s Democratic Party held an emergency meeting Sunday to address the Supreme Court's recent decision to remand an election law violation case against its presidential candidate Lee Jae-myung, Yonhap News reported.
The court’s ruling last week revived allegations that Lee made false statements during the 2022 presidential campaign, potentially barring him from running in the upcoming June 3 presidential election.
Democratic Party lawmakers were also scheduled to convene later to discuss whether to pursue the impeachment of Supreme Court Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae, who delivered the swift and controversial decision. The party has condemned the ruling as a “judicial coup.”
With the snap election approaching, Lee remains the front-runner in national polls following the removal of former President Yoon Suk Yeol, which triggered the vote.
