Saudi Arabia launches 1st communications satellite
Satellite is developed with support from US aerospace manufacturer Lockheed Martin
RIYADH (AA) – Saudi Arabia has successfully launched its first telecommunications satellite from France’s Guiana Space Center, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported Wednesday.
According to the SPA, the satellite weighs some 6.5 tons and has a life expectancy of over 20 years.
“With the use of advanced technologies, the satellite will be able to provide highly-secure communications services to the MENA region, Europe, Africa and Central Asia,” the news agency reported.
The satellite was reportedly developed with the support of U.S. aerospace manufacturer Lockheed Martin and Saudi Arabia’s King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology.
“The successful launch of this satellite is a first step in our partnership with King Abdulaziz City… and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia -- a partnership founded on innovation, science, technology and development,” the SPA quoted Richard Edwards, executive vice-president of Lockheed Martin International, as saying.
