ISTANBUL (AA) - Search and rescue operations continued in Indonesia after Monday’s landslide in the Central Java Region left at least 18 people dead, 13 injured and eight others missing, local authorities said Wednesday.
Officials said that the landslide happened due to a high amount of rainfall, and the rescue operations are still underway, according to the Jakarta Post.
Around 200 rescue personnel and volunteers rushed to the scene near Indonesia’s Pekalongan city in hopes of finding survivors among the mud and debris.
Heavy rain has hampered search and rescue efforts, while heavy machinery was being used to access the difficult terrain.
The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) cautioned residents that rain in the coming days could lead to additional landslides and flash floods.
