Serbian parliament confirms Premier Vucevic’s resignation

If new government is not formed within 30 days, president is required to call new parliamentary elections

SARAJEVO, Bosnia Herzegovina (AA) - Serbia’s parliament speaker on Wednesday confirmed the resignation of Prime Minister Milos Vucevic, officially ending his government’s mandate.

“The National Assembly confirms that Mr. Milos Vucevic resigns from the position of prime minister. With this confirmation, the mandate of the government of the Republic of Serbia ends,” parliament Speaker Ana Brnabic said.

Following the confirmation, the government will remain in a technical mandate for 30 days. If a new government is not formed within that period, the president is required to call new parliamentary elections.

Vucevic announced his resignation on Jan. 28.

His decision came a day after demonstrators, supported by farmers, blocked a major intersection in Belgrade in a daylong protest. The wave of demonstrations began after the collapse of a railway station canopy in Novi Sad on Nov. 1, which killed 15 people.

Protesters have accused the government of negligence and corruption, calling for transparency and accountability.
