Serbia's ruling party declares victory in snap general elections

President Aleksandar Vucic's ruling party wins majority of seats in 250-seat parliament

BELGRADE, Serbia (AA) – Claiming a plurality of nearly 47% of the vote, Serbia's ruling party on Wednesday declared victory in last month’s snap elections based on fresh official results.

The Aleksandar Vucic-Serbia Must Not Stop alliance – supported by President Aleksandar Vucic and led by the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), which has been in power since 2012 – finished ahead with 46.75% of the vote, giving it a majority in the ​​​​250-seat parliament.

The Serbia Against Violence opposition coalition won 23.66% of the vote, and current Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic won 6.55%, as announced by the State Election Commission at a Wednesday press conference.


- Re-votes at more than 30 election centers

In line with the decision of the commission, re-votes of the Dec. 17 local and general elections are being held again on Saturday in more than 30 election centers.

Three of the centers, with 19,543 registered voters, are located in parts of Belgrade, the capital.

Eight centers also had do-over votes on Tuesday.

Serbia on Dec. 17 held snap general and local elections to choose new members of the country's 250-seat parliament, 120-member Assembly of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, and municipal councils.
