WASHINGTON (AA) - One person was killed and nearly two dozen others were injured after multiple tornadoes tore through the southern US state of Mississippi, officials said Monday.
Over 49,000 people are without power, and Gov. Tate Reeves said first responders are conducting search and rescue operations and damage assessments in Rankin and Jasper counties, which are located in the center of the state. Drones are being used in areas where overland vehicles are unable to pass due to downed power lines.
"Multiple damaged homes and road closings in both communities. Be careful! Command centers and Shelters are opening," Reeves said on Twitter.
"Please pray for those affected and for our team members out helping their communities and their fellow Mississippians this morning!" he added.
