ANKARA (AA) – A 1-year-old "miracle baby" survived two days in a ditch along a highway in the US Southern state of Louisiana before a truck driver spotted him, just a few kilometers from where the body of his 4-year-old brother was found, local media reported on Thursday.
The 1-year-old had numerous bug bites but otherwise appeared to be in good condition, said Gary Stitch Guillory, a sheriff in the Calcasieu Parish.
"We looked at this 1-year-old as our miracle baby because he was still alive. Unbelievable," NBC News quoted Guillory as saying.
"This kid spent two days out in the weather on the side of the highway. Thank God that trucker seen him,” he added.
He was taken to the hospital for evaluation and will be placed in the custody of child protective services.
The infant was found alive after a truck driver spotted him crawling off Interstate 10, a few miles away from where his brother, 4, was found in the water behind a rest stop, also in Calcasieu Parish.
The mother of the two children, Aaliyah N. Jack, was arrested at a train station in the bordering state of Mississippi "trying to get out of town," Guillory told a news conference.
The 4-year-old had last been seen with his younger brother and his mother, authorities said.
The names of the children were not released. The cause of the 4-year-old’s death has not been determined.
