NEW DELHI (AA) — At least 10 suspected militants were killed in armed clashes with security forces in the northeastern Indian state of Manipur, authorities said Monday.
According to a statement, a police station and paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) post in the Jiribam district were attacked by "armed militants."
"The security forces retaliated strongly ... after 40-45 minutes of heavy exchange of fire, the situation was brought under control," local police said, adding that one member of the CRPF was injured in the firefight.
Police said that after the “firing ceased,” the area was searched and the dead bodies of 10 militants were recovered, along with arms and ammunition.
A criminal case has been registered with investigations ongoing, the police statement added.
The violence follows ethnic clashes in the state last year, which resulted in the killing of at least 180 people.
