ANKARA (AA)- At least 12 people were killed in a highway accident in West Java province of Indonesia on Monday, police said.
Another two were injured in the crash that involved three vehicles on a highway in Karawang regency when a minibus was about to pull over on the road shoulder, but was suddenly hit by a bus behind, local English daily Jakarta Globe reported.
The bus was also hit by another minibus behind, said Wirdhanto Hadicaksono, Karawang police chief, adding that the two minibuses caught fire after the crash.
The incident occurred in the contraflow lane during the homecoming traffic for Eid-ul-Fitr holiday, resulting in severe congestion along an 8-kilometer (5-mile) stretch and beyond.
All 12 bodies were transported to a nearby hospital and one of the bus drivers has been detained by the police for further investigation.
Road accidents are common in Indonesia due to poor safety standards.
Last December, 12 people died after a passenger bus collided with a roadside guardrail and overturned in the West Java town of Purwakarta.
