JOHANNESBURG (AA) – Three South African Navy personnel died after a massive wave hit their submarine off Kommetjie near Cape Town on Wednesday, a statement by the presidency said on Thursday.
Seven crew members were swept off the deck of the South African Navy submarine SAS Manthatisi as a helicopter tried to rescue them. They were swept to sea.
“While all crew members were recovered, three fatalities were recorded. Other crew members, including a senior officer in a critical condition, are being treated in hospital,” the presidency said.
President Cyril Ramaphosa, who is also the commander-in-chief of the South African armed forces, extended his condolences to the bereaved families and army.
“My thoughts and prayers go out to the families, friends, commanders, and colleagues of the crew members we have lost,” he said.
