5 Peshmerga soldiers killed in Daesh/ISIS attack in Iraq

4 other soldiers injured

BAGHDAD (AA) – Five Peshmerga soldiers of the Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) were killed in a suspected Daesh/ISIS attack in northern Iraq on Sunday, according to a KRG officer.

Suspected Daesh/ISIS gunmen attacked a Peshmerga site in Kolju district in Garmian region in northern Iraq, the officer said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief the media.

He said four other soldiers were injured in the attack.

Peshmerga forces launched a manhunt for the attackers, the officer said.

There was no comment from the Iraqi authorities on the report.

In 2017, Iraq declared victory over Daesh/ISIS by reclaiming all territories the terrorist group controlled since the summer of 2014, which was estimated to be about a third of the country’s territory.

The group, however, still maintains sleeper cells in large areas in Iraq and occasionally launches sporadic attacks.
