KIRKUK, Iraq (AA) - Iraqi security authorities on Wednesday arrested six suspected Daesh terrorists in the city of Kirkuk, according to a security official.
Lt. Gen. Saad Harbiya, the commander of Kirkuk Operations Command, told Anadolu Agency that the suspects had been preparing for an attack when they were arrested in an operation in the central city of Kirkuk.
Harbiya said the operation was carried out in light of previously obtained intelligence.
Saying that Daesh has sleeper cells across the country, especially in Kirkuk, he added that Iraq adopted a security plan that will clear the city of terrorism.
Although security officials have repeatedly announced that Daesh was mostly eradicated in Iraq, the terror group still continues to carry out attacks in the country.
Daesh terror elements are thought to be hiding in the rural areas of Iraq's Mosul, Kirkuk, Diyala, Salahaddin, and Anbar provinces.
