ISTANBUL (AA) - Alain Berset will serve as president for Switzerland in 2023.
The parliament on Wednesday elected the interior minister to the rotating presidency of the country.
Berset, 50, will assume the presidency for the second time with 140 votes in favor and 31 against. Forty-six people abstained.
During his first election to the post, he obtained a much better score receiving 190 votes out of 210 valid ballots.
Berset is set to succeed Ignazio Cassis, who is currently both president and foreign minister.
He will be assisted by Viola Amherd as vice president next year.
The presidency in Switzerland changes hands every year and passes between government ministers, who also continue with their ministerial duties.
Berset's election was expected since in 2022 he held the country's vice presidency and tradition dictates that the following year the number two head of state becomes president.
