Anura Kumara Dissanayake takes oath as Sri Lanka’s president

Leader of National People’s Power Party secured 55% votes in weekend run-off presidential elections

ISTANBUL (AA) - National People’s Power Party leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake Monday took oath as the president of Sri Lanka.

He is the ninth executive president of the island nation.

The Marxist-leaning Sinhalese politician defeated outgoing President Ranil Wickremesinghe and opposition leader Sajith Premadasa.

Dissanayaka secured more than 5.74 million votes, representing 55.89% of the valid votes, in the weekend run-off presidential elections defeating Sajith Premadasa.
