ANKARA (AA) - Major Asian stock markets closed Tuesday with gains as investors digest hawkish comments from the US Federal Reserve.

The Asia Dow, which includes blue-chip companies in the region, rose 1.97%, or 61.73 points, to 3,193.05.

Tokyo's Nikkei 225 stock exchange rose 0.1%, or 26.7 points, to 27,990.

The Japanese economy unexpectedly shrunk by 0.3% quarter-on-quarter in July-September, reversing from April-June's upwardly revised growth of 1.1%, according to preliminary data released on Tuesday.

This was the first contraction in four quarters amid high inflation pressures around the world and a historic fall in the Japanese yen.

The country's gross domestic product (GDP) also decreased 1.2% year-on-year in the third quarter of 2022, missing market forecasts of 1.1% growth.

Industrial production in Japan dropped 1.7% month-on-month in September, after rising 3.4% in August, according to the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry on Tuesday.

The Hang Seng, the benchmark for blue-chip stocks trading on the Hong Kong stock exchange, posted the best performance of the day, surging 4.11% or 723.4 points to 18,343.

China's Shanghai Stock Exchange, meanwhile, gained 1.64%, or 10.68 points, to reach 3,134.08.

Chinese industrial output increased 5% on an annual basis in October, slowed from a 6.3% hike in September as a growing number of COVID-19 cases and a downturn in the property sector weigh on recovery in world's second-largest economy, the National Bureau of Statistics data showed on Tuesday.

Retail trade in China unexpectedly narrowed by 0.5% from a year ago in October versus a 2.5% rise in the prior month, the statistical office said.

China's surveyed urban unemployment rate stood at 5.5% in October, unchanged from a month ago, according to official data released on Tuesday.

The Indian Sensex benchmark went up 0.41%, or 250.35 points, to end the day at 61,874.5 points, while the Singapore index climbed 0.44%, or 14.48 points, to close at 3,275.28.
