ANKARA (AA) - Canadian tennis player Felix Auger-Aliassime advanced to the 2021 US Open semifinals on Tuesday after his Spanish opponent Carlos Alcaraz retired due to an injury during the game.
The 12th seed, Auger-Aliassime eliminated Alcaraz after the 18-year-old Spanish player had to leave the match in the second set.
Alcaraz was trailing behind 6-3, 3-1 as the match lasted for one hour and eight minutes.
This will be Auger-Aliassime's first Grand Slam semifinal. The 21-year-old Canadian national will face world number two Daniil Medvedev from Russia.
Meanwhile, in women's singles, second seed Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus beat her Czech opponent Barbora Krejcikova with sets of 6-1, 6-4 to advance to the semifinals.
Krejcikova is the reigning French Open champion.
In the semifinal, Sabalenka will meet 19-year-old Canadian player Leylah Fernandez.
In the previous rounds, unseeded Fernandez eliminated former US Open winners Naomi Osaka and Angelique Kerber as well as word number five Elina Svitolina in the quarterfinals.
