ISTANBUL (AA) - Former Israeli Interior and Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked was denied a visa to Australia on Thursday because her presence could "vilify" Australians or "incite discord," according to media reports.

Shaked, who was set to attend a security conference in Canberra next week, was informed Thursday by the Australian Home Affairs Ministry, The Australian reported.

The agency cited sections of the Migration Act that allow a visa denial if an applicant’s presence is deemed likely to cause social discord or "incite discord" to a segment of the Australian community.

Shaked served as interior minister from 2021 to 2022 as well as justice minister between 2015 to 2019. Known for her support for illegal settlements in the Occupied West Bank, she is a former member of the New Right party in the Knesset.

Neither the Home Ministry nor any Australian official have commented on the denial or Shaked's allegations.

The security conference, organized by the Australian/Israel & Jewish Affairs Council and Strategic Analysis Australia, is scheduled to discuss defense and security issues.
