ISTANBUL (AA) – Azerbaijan and the EU said on Thursday that the 29th UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) to be held in Baku later this year will provide “favorable opportunities for cooperation in climate action and green transition."
A statement by the Azerbaijani Presidency following a phone conversation between President Ilham Aliyev and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that the two discussed prospects for development of bilateral cooperation.
Highlighting that areas such as renewable energy, transportation connections and energy security were discussed in particular in this regard, the statement said the two leaders underlined the importance of the memorandum of understanding in the field of energy signed by both parties back in 2022.
It further said that von der Leyen emphasized the EU’s readiness to support Azerbaijan in demining efforts.
It went on to say that issues related to the upcoming trilateral talks between Armenia, the EU and the US in Brussels on April 5 were raised at the meeting, adding that Aliyev reiterated Azerbaijan's stance on the meeting and underscored the need for regional inclusivity.
Azerbaijan was announced as the host of the 29th edition of the climate summit to be held in November after Armenia announced it supported Azerbaijan’s bid by withdrawing its own candidacy.
