Peace deal with Armenia vital for regional prosperity, says Ambassador Vilayat Guliyev

BELGRADE, Serbia (AA) - Azerbaijani Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina held a ceremony Thursday in Sarajevo to mark the fourth anniversary of the Karabakh Victory.

Azerbaijani Ambassador Vilayat Guliyev emphasized the importance of the Karabakh Victory for his country at the ceremony that was organized at Azerbaijan Friendship Park.

“We want peace and prosperity in the region. We have certain conditions. This agreement cannot be signed without them. In Armenia, Karabakh is still presented as their territory. If Armenia wants peace and prosperity in the region, it should sign this agreement as soon as possible. We remember with love and respect those who were martyred for our lands,'' said Guliyev.

He added that a peace deal with Armenia is being worked on.

Turkish Ambassador to Sarajevo Sadık Babür Girgin and representatives of Turkish institutions also attended the ceremony.

Relations between Baku and Yerevan have been tense since 1991, when the Armenian military occupied Karabakh, a territory internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan, and seven adjacent regions.

Most of the territory was liberated by Azerbaijan during a 44-day war in the fall of 2020, which ended after a Russian-brokered peace agreement that opened the door to normalization and the demarcation of their border.

Azerbaijan established full sovereignty in Karabakh in September 2023, following an "anti-terrorist operation" after which separatist forces in the region surrendered.

Azerbaijan and Armenia have yet to sign peace treaties and normalize ties.
