BAKU, Azerbaijan (AA) - An Azerbaijani soldier was injured on Wednesday by gunfire from along the border in Armenia.

According to a statement by the Azerbaijani State Border Service, Azerbaijani soldiers stationed around the village of Jijimli in the southwestern Gubadli district came under fire from Armenian positions from around the village of Nerkin Khndzoresk.

The statement said that a lieutenant from the Azerbaijani State Border Service was injured by the gunfire.

It said responsibility for the provocation falls on the military-political leadership of Armenia.

Relations between Baku and Yerevan have remained tense since 1991, when the Armenian military occupied Nagorno-Karabakh, a territory internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan, and seven adjacent regions.

Most of the territory was liberated by Azerbaijan during a war in the fall of 2020, which ended after a Russian-brokered peace agreement that also opened the door to normalization.

In September 2023, Azerbaijan established full sovereignty in Karabakh after an "anti-terrorism operation," after which separatist forces in the region surrendered.
