ANKARA (AA) – Bayern Munich signed Portuguese right-back Joao Cancelo on loan from Manchester City on Tuesday, the transfer window deadline day.
"FC Bayern have signed Portugal international Joao Cancelo on loan from Manchester City. The 28-year-old full-back moves to Munich on an initial deal through to the end of the current season," Bayern Munich said in a statement.
Cancelo said he cannot wait to play for alongside many skillful players at the German powerhouse and he vowed to do his best in his new club.
"I know that this club, this team lives for titles and wins titles every year. I'm also driven by the hunger for success. I'll give my best for FC Bayern," Cancelo said.
Bayern Munich's board member for sport, Hasan Salihamidzic, who is also a former Bayern player, said they are "very happy" to add Cancelo to the team and praised the Portuguese international for his abilities on the pitch.
"We've signed him on loan now and have the possibility of signing him permanently in the summer. Joao is a player we've been thinking about for a while now because we very much appreciate his qualities. He's the optimal fit in our system with his attacking style of play and dynamism, and his mentality and experience fit very well in our team," Salihamidzic remarked.
Cancelo started his career at Portugal's Benfica and then moved to Valencia, Inter Milan and Juventus before joining Manchester City in 2019.
He scored nine goals and made 22 assists in 154 matches for Manchester City, where he won the English Premier League twice.
Cancelo also won local titles with Benfica and Italy's Juventus.
He piled up 41 international caps and scored seven goals for Portugal and helped his nation win the 2019 UEFA Nations League.
