ANKARA (AA) - Bayern Munich were crowned the 2021 German Super Cup champions Tuesday with a 3-1 win against Borussia Dortmund.
In the final at Dortmund's Signal Iduna Park, Polish star Robert Lewandowski scored the opener for Bayern in the 41st minute with a powerful header.
Bayern Munich doubled the lead in the 49th minute as German forward Thomas Muller had an easy chance in the six-yard box to score.
Borussia Dortmund narrowed the gap to one in the 64th minute as German midfielder Marco Reus scored a classy goal with a right foot strike outside the area.
Lewandowski made it 3-1 in the 74th minute, taking advantage of a mistake by Dortmund’s defense.
The Polish forward took his time to make a close-range finish after controlling the ball in the box.
Before the kickoff, both team’s players and fans in the stadium commemorated German football legend and former Bayern Munich forward Gerd Muller, who died at the age of 75 on Sunday.
A minute's silence was observed, and three Bayern Munich players -- Manuel Neuer, Thomas Muller and Lewandowski -- held the German legend's kits each as everyone in Signal Iduna Park applauded to honor him.
Bayern Munich won the German Super Cup trophy for the ninth time.
