WASHINGTON (AA) - US President Joe Biden is sending a trio of senior US officials to Mexico to sit down with President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador to address a historic surge of migrants along the shared border, the White House said Thursday.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas and White House Homeland Security Adviser Elizabeth Sherwood-Randal are slated to depart for Mexico City "in the coming days" to meet the president and senior officials, National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby told reporters.
They will "discuss further actions that can be taken together to address current border challenges," Kirby said.
Biden earlier Thursday spoke by telephone with Lopez Obrador "to talk about ongoing efforts to manage the unprecedented migratory flows in the Western Hemisphere," according to the White House.
"The two leaders agreed that additional enforcement actions are urgently needed so that key ports of entry can be reopened across our shared border," Kirby said.
