WASHINGTON (AA) - US Secretary of State Antony Blinken met virtually on Monday with Guatemalan President-elect Bernardo Arevalo, expressing support for Guatemala’s “peaceful political transition.”

"He also expressed solidarity with the Guatemalan people as they face continued efforts to impede a democratic transfer of power," State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said in a statement.

"The Secretary conveyed that he looks forward to working with the President-elect on issues of shared interest – including continued implementation of the Root Causes Strategy to address irregular migration – and that the United States will continue to use all available tools against those who act to undermine democracy and the rule of law in Guatemala," Miller said

Blinken and Arevalo also affirmed their "mutual interest in a prosperous, stable and democratic Western Hemisphere," said the statement.
