Botswana's president announces general elections on Oct. 30

Mokgweetsi Eric Masisi says parliament to be dissolved Sept. 5; president nominations on Sept. 28

LUSAKA, Zambia (AA)- President Mokgweetsi Eric Masisi announced Tuesday that Botswana will hold general elections on Oct. 30.

Masisi said in a virtual address that the 12th parliament will be dissolved Sept. 5 and nominations for presidential candidates will follow on Sept. 28 at the High Court in Gaborone, the capital.

"Nominations for both parliamentary and council candidates will follow on Oct. 4. 2024. The general elections will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 30. 2024. To promote higher voter turnout, I am also pleased to declare both Oct. 30 and Oct. 31. 2024 as public holidays," said Masisi.

He urged Botswanans to embrace the opportunity and vote in significant numbers.

"Let us unite in demonstrating our steadfast commitment to democracy, peace and development; values that are intertwined and fundamental to our nation," added Masisi who will run as a candidate on the ticket of the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP).​​​​​​​
